I heard of a theft at Defence Colony, New Delhi in the last week. The thieves (domestic help) took away valuables worth more than 80 Lac Rupees, leaving the owner of the house sleeping.......Fortunately I know this family.....and we were to call them Buaji and Foofaji.

We have known them for last 30+ years. A family we envied a lot, that time this family was in Tanzania, they use to come to India, once a year or so and that was a time for us to know each other, interact, play some indoor games etc etc. as they had two sons more or less of the age of myself and my elder brother. The news of their planned arrival was in itself something to be looked on for us. And when they use to reach, we anxiosly use to wait for an opportunity to see their toys, the belongings, clothes etc etc.

When I heard of this theft, I looked back in history, my childhood days and the moments when except the gender and age, there was no other point where we could match these two young boys, who are both settled in US now, must be doing great in their respective fields. One of them is an Engineer and another one is a Doctor, both married having kid/s (I dont know the details).

Why I am writing this piece is because, we keep acquiring and acquiring, throughout our live, with both reasonable as well as unreseanable means, and one day, it just changes hands and goes away, leaving us at the same level.

Before the theft took place, around 10 days back, Buaji expired. She had a stroke. She had some kidney problem as well. After all the usual rituals were done, the guests and relatives went away to their respective places. So only the granddaughter and foofaji stayed back. The help in the house (male) who knew almost everything about the household items and others, put some intoxicant in the dinner servings, in order to enjoy the comfort of collecting everyhing with ease, put everything he/they could and went away with those belongings and valuables.

We earn, acquire and keep it for our comfort and just on one fine morning we look fresh as ever without having any of this. It all remains here on the same earth, may be in the same city, but just its possession gets transferred, by force. Even otherwise, in the times of unequal distribution of wealth, these events and accidents try to make it more even. Except the emotional attachment to the objects, there is nothing else which this family would miss....... Ofcourse this emotional attachment can not be valued in terms of money........

Lets enjoy the present moment and to the extent possible give away more than multiplying acquisitions that toooooooo with exploitation......
